  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 & 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1 & 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (chopped into chunks)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (granulated or raw sugar or both)
  • vanilla ice cream (for serving, not optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, combine sliced apples with lemon zest, lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and spices. Cook over medium heat until apples are tender.
  3. Transfer apple mixture to a greased casserole dish.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder; mix in buttermilk and egg until combined.
  5. Spread the batter over the apple mixture. Dot with cold butter pieces and sprinkle with additional sugar.
  6. Bake for 45-55 minutes until golden brown on top. Let cool for 15 minutes before serving.
